So, why do we use cover letters? Effectively, a cover letter is an advertisement for your resume. Your cover letter should grab your employer by the short & curly’s and say ‘HEY! Read my resume!’ but obviously much more politely.
So, what should you do?

  • Consider why an employer is hiring – because they need someone to help solve a problem for their business! So, your cover letter should convey that YOU are the solution to that problem.

  • Include some reference to the hiring company, showing that you know something about them. This shows you are keen and have gone above and beyond the normal level of effort. Use Google to find some quick info!

  • List some of your attributes that match what the job ad wants. For example – ‘According to your advertisement you are looking for someone who is punctual, friendly and reliable. Based on this I believe myself to be an excellent candidate for the position.’ This is tailoring the cover letter to the job.

  • Avoid sounding like ‘please give me this job so I can advance and make lots of money’ instead try more to come across as ‘I am excited at the prospect of bringing my skills and experience to benefit your company’. Remember to tell them how you can help them, not the other way around.

  • Keep it short and focused, don’t ramble on and on!
