Your First Day
So, you’ve successfully landed yourself a job!! Well done!! You deserve it too, after all the hard work and dedication you’ve put into it! Of course your first day at a new job can be a little nerve-wracking, but here’s a few pointers on what to expect and how to easily become part of the team overnight!!
Depending on what job it is, and where you are working, you may encounter any or all of these things in your first days being employed…
- Your new boss!
You’ll probably meet your supervisor almost straight away once you start, they may or may not be the person looking after you for your first day. Be sure to concentrate on your supervisor’s name so you don’t forget it, and listen as much as possible to any information they give you regarding what they expect from you at work and what the job involves.
- Intros all round
Depending on the size of the team you’ll probably be taken around to meet everyone who you will be working with. It may be a little more difficult to remember all of their names, but most people are forgiving with a newbie, so it shouldn’t cause too many issues if you forget a few!
- Here, there and everywhere
As part of your induction you will probably get a little tour of your worksite or office. This is to show you where the toilets are, emergency exits, stairs/elevators and other important things like the tea & coffee making facility, and where they keep their choc-chip bikkies! (Whatever you do, don’t forget that!!)
- Happy snaps!
You might also need to have your photo taken for a security pass or ID card – so look sharp!
- Good form
It’s pretty likely that a good part of your first day will be spent reading and filling out forms. Codes of conduct, banking details, tax file number declarations, fraud and corruption policies, employment contracts etc etc the list goes on!!
Your first day is generally about getting all the housekeeping done, and getting you prepared for your new role. Depending on the level of the job and your experience you may have some formal or informal training with your supervisor or a colleague. You may also get right into it and start performing tasks! It’s good to show initiative and interest in performing well in the position. Your role is to be asking questions in order for you to understand exactly what is required of you, so ask away!!
Be friendly to your co-workers and get the insider info from them as soon as possible!! Ask advice on doing well in your job and learn more about the company as a whole. Keen as beans never fails! |
